Pioneering novel cultivars: Puro’s world-class cannabis research programme

1 December, 2025

Cannabis research requires scale, expertise, and patience - qualities that define Puro's breeding and screening programme.

Thanks to a $13million grant from the New Zealand government we’re developing the next generation of cannabis varieties.

Our programme screens dozens of different varieties annually, cataloguing their complete cannabinoid and terpene profiles while evaluating how they respond to Marlborough’s unique growing conditions. This isn’t random experimentation; its systematic research aimed at discovering novel therapeutic combinations.

The scale of this work sets us apart globally. Our comprehensive approach allows us to identify subtle variations that create meaningful therapeutic differences – varieties that might produce similar major cannabinoids but dramatically different minor compound profiles.

Without external support, the costs of trialling hundreds of varieties while maintaining commercial production would be prohibitive. The support we are receiving from the New Zealand government allows us to pursue long-term research goals that benefit the entire industry.

Our unique terroir adds another research dimension. How does a specific genetic variety respond to Marlborough’s distinctive soil, climate, and sunlight spectrum? We’ve discovered that some varieties produce exceptional results in our environment, while others perform better elsewhere.

The commercial applications are already evident. Several major medical cannabis companies have purchased genetics from our breeding programme. When other cultivators commercialise varieties originally developed at Puro, it validates our research approach while expanding patient access to novel therapeutics.

Our catalogue doesn’t just list varieties; it documents their complete chemical profiles and performance characteristics. This scientific approach enables precise recommendations for specific therapeutic applications.

Perhaps most importantly, our research maintains focus on patient outcomes. We’re not developing varieties for higher THC percentages or exotic names; we’re creating specific chemical combinations that address therapeutic needs.

This commitment to science-based innovation positions Puro at the forefront of cannabis medicine’s evolution.
